SIXTEEN primary schools from the Nelson Mandela Bay area will gather for a fun-filled afternoon learning about the environment and participating in the BOATS Mobile Game Application Tournament.

The African Youth Waste Network, project of Sustainable Seas Trust, are aiming at creating a waste wise generation by encouraging the youth to use their voices for positive change in inland and coastal environments through the theme of “Coding the Future” and reaching the goal of “Towards Zero Plastics to the Seas of Africa”.

“We are surrounded by plastic, and plastic pollution affects everyone and everything. The event will emphasise on the detrimental impact of plastic pollution on our environment and how the youth have the power, energy and bright ideas to help find solutions to this problem, through both art and science,” said the Sustainable Seas Trust.

The event is presented through the collaboration of Sustainable Seas Trust, NMU, SANCCOB and Captain Fanplastic. It will consist of various environmental education activities including fun and interactive presentations, the BOATS mobile gaming application tournament and a clean-up at the Cape Recife Beach.

BOATS powered by Tangibl is a two-player mobile game aimed at introducing players to the challenge of plastics in the ocean.

Each player needs to move a boat through a grid, removing plastic tokens from the ocean by landing on them. This is done through the use of tangible tokens which allows for the commands.

Once the set of tokens is packed out, a photo is taken. Through image recognition, the commands then become executable in the app, moving the boat through the grid. A set of multiple-choice questions that relate to plastics in the ocean educates its players through the basic science of computer coding.

The tournament will take place at SANCCOB PE on April 23 from 13:00 to 16:30. The winner will walk away with R2 500.
