According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, during the incident, one of the suspects was apprehended and one illegal firearm was seized.
She said it is alleged that at about 23:45, SAPS Motherwell crime prevention unit members were busy with their duties on Mtendwe Street, NU7, when they were approached by at least four suspects, who opened fire at the members.
“Members retaliated, and the suspects started to flee in different directions. During the incident, one suspect was arrested, and a 9mm firearm was seized. During the incident, one member sustained a gunshot wound in the lower body, was taken to the hospital, and was later discharged,” she added.
“The suspect (34) was detained on charges of attempted murder, pointing of a firearm, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspect will appear in the Motherwell magistrate court during the week.”
