Police arrested an alleged hijacking suspect, recovered a hijacked vehicle and confiscated a prohibited firearm in Kwazakhele on Tuesday, July 25.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, it is alleged that SAPS Kwazakhele task team members followed up on information of a hijacked red Toyota Tazz travelling on the M17 towards Daku Road.
She said the members entered the M17 from Boxongo Street and identified the vehicle with three occupants inside.
“The SAPS members, assisted by a private tracking company, attempted to force the vehicle to stop; however, it collided with the tracking company’s vehicle. Both vehicles lost control and collided with the sidewalk on the oncoming traffic lane.
“It is further alleged that two suspects jumped out of the Toyota Tazz while fleeing and fired shots.
“The third suspect (driver) was apprehended as he attempted to flee from the vehicle. A 9mm star pistol, with a filed off serial number, and two rounds of ammunition were confiscated,” said Janse van Rensburg.
The suspect was detained on a string of charges, including vehicle hijacking, attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, pointing of firearm, possession of suspected hijacked vehicle and reckless or negligent driving.
