The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police together with the South African Police Service (SAPS) will work jointly to tackle the non-COVID-19 compliant social gatherings that have been highlighted as a contributor to the rising COVID-19 positive cases in the City.
This comes as the City continues to record more positive cases, raising concerns and fears of a second wave of infections.
As at 20 October, there were 396 active cases in the City.
NMBM Disaster Management Chairperson, Shane Brown, said following concerns that were shared during the City’s Joint Operating Centre meeting on Tuesday, SAPS and NMBM Metro Police had been alerted to the increase of social gatherings.
“They have been briefed on the regulations in this regard and will now pay a special focus on these crowds especially going towards the weekend,” Brown said.
In addition, the NMBM with other Government stakeholder will on Friday, 23 October conduct a public awareness and education campaign to ensure that residents adhere to the COVID-19 regulations and be mindful of the current water disaster.
GCIS, SAPS and the Department of Health will be part of the programme which will also focus on student residences as reports show that students continue to have parties without observing COVID-19 regulations in place.
