Nelson Mandela Bay police have made a significant breakthrough in yesterday’s murder incident, in which a 22-year-old security official was fatally wounded in Gqabi Street, KwaNobuhle.

During the early hours of this morning, September 23, the Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combatting Unit (CCU) members successfully arrested two suspects between the ages of 20 and 34 years, in Humansdorp and KwaNobuhle respectively. A third suspect (24) was shot during yesterday’s incident and passed away in hospital yesterday afternoon.

Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, said that at approximately 09:00 on September 22 two security officers were busy escorting a bread truck towards Gqabi Street when they were approached by a group of unknown men.

“One of the men drew a firearm and started shooting at them. A security officer returned fire and was fatally injured during the crossfire. The suspect also disarmed the security officer and fled the scene in an unknown vehicle,” she said.

The security officer was identified as Christopher George from Arcadia, Gqeberha.

The two suspects are due to appear in the KwaNobuhle Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 26 on charges of murder and the possession of suspected stolen property. Additional charges may be added as the investigation unfolds.
