Gqeberha police have fatally shot a 23-year-old man who was allegedly closely linked with various crimes around the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) area yesterday, November 7.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, this was an attempt to eradicate unlicensed firearms.

She said police members attached to the National Intervention Unit embarked on crime prevention duties in the Walmer area.

“During their tour of duty at Walmer Links, they spotted a white VW Polo driven by the suspect (23), who was involved in various crimes within the Nelson Mandela Bay District, and they tried to stop and search him,” she reported.

She added: “He reversed his vehicle and was blocked in by the police. He got out of the vehicle with a firearm, pointing it at the members.

“The members responded and fatally shot the suspect. Upon searching, they recovered an unlicensed firearm.”

“An inquest docket and a case of pointing a firearm were opened for investigation. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has taken the case for further investigation,” she concluded.
