SEVERAL performers from across South Africa will team up for a play that will be performed at the Athenaeum Little Theatre next week.
The play, Rape Textile, will place the focus on the vicious attacks on women in the country.
“Rape Textile is trying to give a voice to the perpetrator on how and when rape happens,” said Unathi Ngqolombe, founder and owner of Unathi Creations, which is hosting the event.
“At the core of this performance there’s a theatrical surveillance that paints a vivid picture of what happened at a NMU computer lab in 2017 when two female fashion students were attacked and raped,” said Ngqolombe.
“With this performance we are trying to hammer in the reality of our society to shape it according to what we want it to be and give healing to women as they are most affected.”
The use of natural sounds during the play will give a cold ambiance to give insight on how cold and cruel rape is.
Performance art by Ntomboxolo Nomkalo from Johannesburg, Asanda Hanabe from East London in dance and acting alongside a Nelson Mandela Bay theatre royal, Xabiso Zweni, will bring different monologues to dive into the thoughts of voices no-one wants to listen to.
Poetry by North Star will also bring the audience an experience they will never forget. This performance will then be followed by pop-up street performances at various venues at a later date.
Rape Textile will be performed at the Athenaeum Little Theatre in Central on October 25 at 18:30.
