A TEAM from Phoenix Tae-kwondo represented the Eastern Cape at the SA Korean Martial Arts Association’s (SAKMAA) national tournament in Potchefstroom last month.
The team consisted of 39 members from the various Phoenix Taekwondo clubs in the Eastern Cape. The youngest competitor was only seven years old and the oldest 49.
Under the care and training of Sabum-Nim Gerd Hummel, many hours of training paid off when the team brought back 33 gold medals, 39 silver and 16 bronze.
The proudest moment of the tournament, however, was when Cleyvon Frank from the Despatch club won first place and was crowned Grand Champion of the 2018 SAKMAA tournament.
The club also took third place in the Grand Champion event when Knowledge Njera from Port Elizabeth won his match.
