THE people of Nelson Mandela Bay will be the focus for an all-new triathlon which will be in the spotlight this spring.
The inaugural PEople’s Triathlon will take place along the Summerstrand beachfront as an event which is an all local affair.
Created by a local events company specifically for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay, this race is aimed at all those athletes who know and train on this scenic beachfront route.
The PEople’s Triathlon, which is set to take place on Sunday, September 1, will be limited to the first 1 000 entrants and will focus on being family friendly.
Sports events organiser and PEople’s Triathlon creator, Michael Zoetmulder, has spoken about why the event was so desperately needed in Nelson Mandela Bay.
“With early bird entry fees until Friday, June 7, priced at only R2 000 per entrant, the triathlon comes in as by far the most affordable in the manic environment into which it has been born.
“The triathletes in Port Elizabeth and surrounds have been asking for an affordable yet professionally managed triathlon event in the city and this is exactly what the People’s Triathlon will give.
“Port Elizabeth naturally offers the perfect venue and has been attracting international triathletes to its shores for a number of years.
“This event gives the opportunity for everyone to compete in a world class triathlon,” said Zoetmulder.
Participants will have to conquer the course which will start with a 2km swim in the ocean at Hobie Beach. They will then have to get on their bikes and endure a 90km cycle along the Algoa Bay coastline before tackling the final transition into a 21km run made up of five laps of a 4.2km course before reaching the finish line at Hobie Beach.
Zoetmulder added, “The course was chosen carefully from a range of different options because of how safe, fast and effortlessly it runs, and we believe that the spectator friendly nature will add a great deal to the fun and family atmosphere which the event hopes to create at South Africa’s ultimate triathlon destination.”
For those taking on and finishing the gruelling test, there awaits a race pack at registration and a well-earned finishers shirt with a medal upon completion.
Whether you are training for the next big race or testing yourself against the best, the PEople’s Triathlon may be one of a few which ticks all the boxes on your triathlon journey and most definitely the right stepping stone to taking part in the ultimate triathlon challenge in March next year.
The event is open to all budding triathletes and features the individual and team category for teams or two or three people. Entries and race details found at www.zsports.co.za/ultratri.
