FANS were treated to an impressive basketball match when PE Comets dethroned the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayoral Cup defending champions, Spartans, 100-91 in the final, at the Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Centre Hall on Sunday.

Early on, Spartans started putting pressure on Comets, who looked ready for the showdown.

The champions collected points quickly, but Comets also came back strongly. Points were coming from both sides with the fans sitting on the edges of their seats.

Spartans took the lead 27-25 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Comets did not disappoint their home supporters as they registered a narrow 54-48 lead. The game continued to produce fireworks, with Comets leading 74-72 in the third quarter.

It appeared as if the champions were on track for a successful defence, but it was not going to be. Comets were crowned as NMB Mayoral Cup champions after defeated Spartans 100-91 in the final quarter.

Luvuko Manana, Siyanda Jemsana, Lwando Cakwebe and Phumzile Panda were the most outstanding players in the line-up of Comets.

In the play-offs game, Gemineyez defeated New Brighton Knights 71-66.

Gemineyez’s seasoned player, Dinilesizwe Madikwe, was the most valuable player because his contribution motivated his side to overcome their counterparts.
