EASTERN CAPE – Police continued to intensify efforts to combat crime in the Eastern Cape, resulting in the arrest of more than 1,000 suspects during high-density operations, particularly in hotspot areas.
These operations form part of the ongoing Operation Shanela II in a bid to rid the province of criminal activities.
The suspects were arrested for various criminal offences, including common assault, rape, burglary and theft, driving under the influence of alcohol, assault, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, malicious damage to property, and possession and dealing in drugs.
Unlicensed firearms and ammunition were confiscated, disrupting the availability of illegal weapons and preventing firearm-related violence in communities.
Police also seized 1,034 units of abalone as well as dangerous weapons to ensure the safety of all.
The Eastern Cape SAPS management commended the multidisciplinary team on their commitment to removing illegal firearms from the streets, apprehending perpetrators, and ensuring the safety and security of communities across the province.
SAPS said they appreciate the efforts of community members in sharing valuable information with the police, and encourage them to continue reporting criminal activities to Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
