DEFYING Gravity Productions, together with the PE Opera House will be hosting Chains, a dance piece choreographed by Heidi Sampson and Lauren McCarthy, at The Barn Theatre on Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28.

Sampson and McCarthy realised their childhood dreams of owning and running their own dance company together in 2010, when Defying Gravity Productions was born.

Since its inception, their company has choreographed many successful high school and primary school productions such as Honk for Sunridge Primary, Urine Town for Woodridge Primary School and Beauty And The Beast for Victoria Park High School.

Defying Gravity also offers fun-filled classes for everyone who wants to move his or her body, with their youngest dancer being just three years old and their oldest aged 81.

Sampson and McCarthy’s passion for dance and teaching the art form has led them on broad and wonderful adventures not just in Nelson Mandela Bay but abroad too.

Having received their national colours in performing arts, the duo took part in The World Championships in Los Angeles in July 2011.

In this competition, they both won year scholarships to dance at the prestigious and world famous Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles, California in the USA.

Upon their return from Los Angeles, they took part in The Dance World Cup and together with nine of Defying Gravity dancers represented South Africa in Portugal at the International Dance Competition.

Chains starts at 19:00 on Friday, July 27, and at 14:00 and 19:00 on Saturday, July 28.

The admission fee is R100 (single ticket), R150 (double), R50 (students) and R20 (pensioners).

A cash bar will also be available at the Ideas Corner (upper foyer) and the sweet counter on the ground floor (open an hour before the show begins and after the show).
