An off-duty officer from the Motherwell Tactical Response Team, with the assistance of SAPS Motherwell Crime Prevention Unit successfully arrested a suspect and recovered a firearm after a robbery on Wednesday, March 6 in Motherwell.

According to a media statement by SAPS, police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said, it is alleged that at approximately 18:15, SAPS Motherwell responded to a complaint of robbery in progress in Mgwalana Street, NU6.

” On arrival, the off-duty officer alleged that he was training at the nearby sports centre when he was alerted of a woman being robbed of her cell phone.

The suspect was seen running and the member immediately jumped into his private vehicle and chased after him,” said Janse Van Rensburg.

” The suspect jumped into a grey Toyota Tazz which was stopped by the police officer.

“The suspect involved in the robbery, was identified,” she added.

” A 9mm firearm, one round of ammunition and the stolen cell phone were recovered. The suspect, aged 32 years old was arrested on charges of robbery with firearm and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.”  

The suspect appeared at the Motherwell magistrate court today, March 7.

Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General, Vuyisile Ncata commended the off duty member who went beyond the call of duty to ensure public safety.

“His swift action and bravery in apprehending the suspect while off duty exemplifies the highest standards of dedication and loyalty,” said Ncata.
