An off-duty police officer was gunned down and her husband injured during a shooting incident in Motherwell yesterday afternoon, October 11.

The 40-year-old sergeant and her husband returned from a nearby shop just before 16:00. As they parked their VW Polo in their open garage in their yard in Bhoyiboy Street, NU 8 in Motherwell, an unknown man approached them.

The husband, who was the passenger, was shot twice (in the shoulder and upper body) while the sergeant who was driving, was shot multiple times and died at the scene. Her husband was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that the suspect allegedly got into a parked vehicle in the street and drove off.

“At this stage the motive for the shootings are under investigation. Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder,” Naidu said.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt. Gen. Nomthetheleli Mene, has called for an intensified collaborative approach and the cooperation of the community following the incident.

Mene has also conveyed her condolences to the family of the deceased member and has called on the community to work with the police in fighting these ruthless and callous criminals living among them.

“Such killing undermines the integrity of the SAPS, therefore we will be leaving no stone unturned until the perpetrator is found and arrested,” Mene said.
