An off-duty police officer heeded to his calling yesterday
just after midnight when he recovered and confiscated firearms and ammunition that
were going to be transported to Queenstown earlier that day.
At approximately 00: 10, as the warrant officer was
following up on information he received, he noticed a male emerging from a yard
in Maseleni Street in New Brighton with two bags in his hand.
Whilst waiting for backup, the officer confronted the
alleged suspect. The suspect started running with the officer in close pursuit.
As he fled, the suspect fired shots at the officer and managed to escape
through a narrow gap between the houses. While running, the suspect also discarded
a shotgun and the bags.
The following firearms and ammunition were recovered:
- A pump action shotgun: stolen in Kabega
Park in July 2017
December 2019
Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, confirmed the incident.
“Police are investigating a case of attempted murder. An enquiry docket was
opened in respect of the recovered firearms and ammunition,” she said.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District
Commissioner, Brig. Thandiswa Kupiso, commended the officer for his dedication
and commitment in ensuring the safety of his community and making sure that
illegal firearms are off the streets.
“This officer has gone beyond the
call of duty and his actions reflect true service delivery to the communities. This officer knew the risks and dangers associated with his vocation,
yet he remained committed to the cause of serving and protecting his community.
This selfless act is commendable and a warning to criminals that the police are
watching their every move at the least expected time,” Kupiso said.
