The Cerebral Palsy Association Eastern Cape ended the year on a high note when they celebrated a milestone on Tuesday, December 8.

The event was in honour of Dr Nadine Lang’s 50 years of voluntary service with CPA Eastern Cape, which is located in Summerstrand.

Lang, who was born in England, first moved to South Africa in 1964 because she married a South African. She has not moved out of Port Elizabeth since.

“I’ve not moved out of Summerstrand, never mind PE,” she quipped.

She first got involved at Cape Recife School because her daughter had cerebral palsy. “There were only 40 learners. It’s now got well over 400,” she said.

“I joined the fund-raising group. When my baby was old enough and she was in school full time, I became secretary for the PTA (parent–teacher association) for several years.”

She then got invited to join the CPA, which was the sponsoring body for the school.

“I was on this committee and the ladies’ committee. I was on the school board. I think I’ve been on every committee since,” she said.

She was the chairperson for CPA Eastern Cape from 1996 to 2003 and she still serves on the executive committee as vice-chairperson.

“Yes, I still enjoy it, though I don’t do an awful lot now,” she said.

Raymond Drake, chairperson for CPA Eastern Cape, said, “It’s been a privilege knowing [her] for every second I’ve been party to this association.

“And I’ve done many things in my life, but I’ve never congratulated somebody for 50 years’ dedicated service.

“The dignity and care that I’ve seen over the years, the intelligence, the inputs, the care to detail – all those things are lessons I’ve learned, and most I got from her.”
