AFTER an absence of over three and a half years, jazz singer, Esther Miller, returns to her home town this December.
Miller, together with jazz guitarist, Wayne Bosch, will be performing a show, Fotografia – an intimate evening of nostalgic jazz, at the Walmer Golf Club on Saturday, December 17, as well as an intimate soiree on Sunday, December 18.
More about Esther Miller
Miller is a jazz singer of the classic school, possessing an outstanding technique, sensitive interpretation and an eclectic repertoire.
She was born and raised in Gqeberha where she sang in church and school choirs and raided the family Nat “King” Cole albums for early inspiration.
She left town to study medicine at Cape Town University, but soon gave in to the lure of jazz. She started off her professional career as the vocalist with Gerry Spencer’s Jazz Cyclone – one of the leading bands on the South African jazz circuit at the time.
During this early apprenticeship, she worked with some excellent players, American jazz legend, Herb Ellis, British saxophonist, Alan Skidmore, Johnny Fourie, Errol and Alvin Dyers, and saxophonists, Winston Mankunku and Ezra Ngkukana, to name but a few.
She settled in the UK for 10 years where she performed and recorded with some excellent musicians including Steve Melling, Steve Waterman and Karen Sharp.
She now performs in many different settings including cruise ships and five-star venues around the world.
Esther lives in Denmark and has been exploring the Scandinavian jazz scene.
In 2020, she collaborated with Danish jazz musicians and recorded her latest album, Smile.
Wayne Bosch
Bosch is firmly positioned among a list of A-rate guitarists in the Mother City.
Several musical influences have marked his evolution as a player, from classical guitar language laid down by Wes Montgomery, to the more modern styles explored by the likes of Charlie hunter, Pat Martino, Martin Tayler and finger style whizz, Tuck Andress.
Bosch hit the professional bandstand in 1996 with pianist and Bill Evans disciple, Gerry Spencer, who, along with local legend, Alvin Dyers, has made enduring contributions to Bosch’s musical development.
Bosch was exposed to international audiences from 1997, while traversing in the Indian Ocean with Spencer and Judith Sephuma on the cruise liner, The Symphony, and he has since gigged and/or studied with the cream of Cape Town talent, including Basil Moses, Ezra Ngcukana, Esther Miller, Robbie Jansen, Mark Fransman, Mike Campbell and Daryl Andrews.
He is noted for his work with vocalists such as French ace, Deborah Tanguy, San Francisco singer, Opie Bellas and local star, Emily Bruce.
