The Northern Areas Scout Movement has received a much-needed boost with the appointment of Theresa Naidoo as District Commissioner for NMB North, earlier this year.

After years without a district commissioner, Naidoo has brought new hope and energy to the region, tackling challenges head-on, and inspiring young people to get involved. One of her key initiatives is to develop a plot of land donated to the scouts in the 1970s, which has lain dormant for decades.

“A committee has been formed to raise funds for the construction of a hall, which will serve as a hb for scouting activities and community events,” she said.

Currently, only three scout groups operate in the Northern Areas: Saint Joseph’s in Bloemendal, Holy Spirit in Arcadia, and First West End in West-End. However, with Naidoo’s leadership, the scouts are determined to revitalise the movement, and provide a positive alternative for young people in the area. On Mandela Day, youth and adults came together to clean up the plot.

“Scouting is not just about outdoor adventures and practical skills, but it’s also about moulding responsible citizens and good leaders.

“In a region plagued by substance abuse, gang-related activities, and teenage pregnancies, scouting offers a nurturing environment for young individuals to flourish,” the new district commissioner concluded.
