TO celebrate World Tourism Day tomorrow, September 27, Nelson Mandela University will be launching and introducing the new B.Com Hospitality Management programme, which will commence in 2019, to tourism educators in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The event will form part of National Tourism and Heritage Month celebrations. The B.Com Hospitality programme will be marketed and promoted officially tomorrow with the aim of the educators cascading the information to their learners and to encourage the educators to further their own studies.
They will be given information on the new B.Com Hospitality degree and all other programmes offered by the Tourism Department. Thereafter, the educators will be transported to undertake a walking tour of Route 67 in the inner city, which starts at the Campanile and ends at the Donkin Reserve, to give them an opportunity to be “a tourist in their own city”.
Back on campus there will be another plenary session where they will be addressed by the new CEO of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, Glenton de Kock.
He will talk to key stakeholders about destination marketing in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The hospitality and tourism industry has been earmarked as one of the main drivers of the economy of Southern Africa, which has become a world-class tourism destination. Hospitality and associated industries have experienced exceptional growth and there is great demand for appropriately educated managers in the hospitality and tourism sector.
The proposed B.Com Hospitality degree programme will constitute a vital element in the efforts to bring the local hospitality industry up to world-class standards.
While students will get the opportunity to develop practical and operational expertise in the industry, the degree programme aims at providing them with a comprehensive education in aspects of economics, business management, financial accounting, information systems and logistics, operations and marketing management, with particular reference to hospitality and tourism establishments.
