The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has welcomed and commended the arrest of
five men in Chatty this week, after they were busted with stolen Municipal
infrastructure from the Chatty Library.
Two vigilant Metro Police officers made the arrest after they found the suspects
exiting the library with two metal window frames. An additional eight metal window frames were recovered from the back of the bakkie
the men were travelling in.
NMBM Safety and Security Mayoral Committee Member, Lawrence Troon said:
“We commend our officers on these positive arrests. The suspects admitted they had
removed the metal window frames from the Chatty library. They were immediately
arrested for the damage to municipal infrastructure.
“The state of vandalism in our Metro is rather concerning and we call on all our
stakeholders to work with us in fighting this cancer in our society. These criminal
activities are stealing away from us because these facilities are meant to better the
lives of our residents.”
The suspects, aged between 26 to 54 years old, were detained at the
Bethelsdorp Police Station.
The driver of the bakkie was also issued with a fine for driving without a driver’s
licence and driving an unlicenced vehicle. The vehicle was handed over to the SA
Police Service.
