The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has intensified its water leaks repair strategy and launched an aggressive area focused water leaks programme where internal and external teams will zoom into specific areas to fix reported and unreported water leaks.

This comes as the City continues to battle with a severe drought with the total dam levels currently at 12.76%.

Mayoral Committee Member for Infrastructure and Engineering, Cllr Masixole Zinto, was on the ground on Saturday, 1 May in KwaNobuhle which has been highlighted as an area which will be hit first by dry taps in July should there be no major rainfall.

Zinto urged residents in KwaNobuhle on Saturday to report all water leaks and use water sparingly.

“KwaNobuhle is the first area that is anticipated to be affected if we don’t drop our water consumption. We are here to fix the 200 reported water leaks. Every weekend our teams will focus on a particular area to fix leaks, reported and unreported.

“During the week, our teams attend to various water reports and this programme will allow us to take all our teams to focus on a specific area. We believe this will save us millions of litres of water as sometimes leaks are not reported,” said Zinto.

Acting Executive Director for Infrastructure and Engineering, Joseph Tsatsire said: “Through this programme we will be taking our teams all over the metro. Normally teams work in different areas but now we will be taking them from focusing in Port Elizabeth, Despatch or Uitenhage. We will dedicate this programme specifically to the water leaks and from Monday they can resume their normal duties which also include fixing water leaks. Residents can expect to see us all over the metro from today onwards.”

The City wishes to remind residents to use water sparingly and stick to the 50 litres per day restriction to avoid a dry July.

Residents are encouraged to report water leaks on the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality App or call the 0800 20 50 50 line.
