Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Mayoral Committee Member for Sport, Arts, Recreation (SREC), Bassie Kamana, handed over sporting equipment on Tuesday, January 30, to different sport clubs across the metro.

The donations are in line with the National Sport and Recreation Plan that seeks to “create an enabling environment” to assist SA sport to achieve its goals of an active and winning nation. The recipients were chosen following an application and adjudication process by a committee consisting of SREC and Budget and Treasury Directorates, working with the sporting federations to make sure that the process is fair and only qualifying clubs receive the donations.

Kamana officiated the handover of the sporting equipment to 37 sporting clubs. Some of the clubs that benefited were football, netball, cricket, rugby, and a club for the physically challenged.

Kamana said,

As a municipality we understand your plight; we know what you seek to achieve, and we have walked the road and understand the challenges. We cannot then fold our arms and do nothing. Nelson Mandela Bay is faced with serious socially ill challenges with the youth at the centre. We need to work with you to rescue our youth from these problems that kill their dreams.

Kamana called on all sporting clubs to work with the municipality in protecting sporting facilities that are “currently under attack from vandals”.

One of the recipients from Sophakama Netball Club from Zwide, Nelisa Seti, said she was happy and encouraged by the donation.

Seti said,

Sophakama is a club with many divisions and currently does not receive any support. Our girls have to play matches with ordinary white t-shirts against clubs that have everything. That discourages them from chasing their dreams. This donation will go a long way.

Every financial year in May the metro issues a notice in local newspapers for sporting clubs, federations, and NGOs to apply for assistance. Only clubs that are affiliated to sporting federations or associations qualify for a donation. Once the notice is published the process of application is open for six weeks. Sporting clubs are encouraged to be on the lookout for the notice in local newspapers, the metro website, and social media pages, during the month of May 2024.
