THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is taking major strides to enhance road safety with the installation of new speed cameras across the metro area. This project, worth R50 million, marks a pivotal step towards reducing accidents and ensuring compliance with speed regulations.

As of December 4, six of these new cameras are fully operational, with plans to install a total of 20 across the metro upon the project’s completion. These cameras have been strategically placed in areas traditionally known for high accident rates, ultimately aiming to maximise their impact on road safety and reduce fatalities. The initiative is expected to bring about several community benefits as the speed cameras support effective speed limit enforcement. By encouraging responsible driving behaviours, accidents and related fatalities are reduced, playing a crucial role in promoting safer roads.

Additionally, these cameras empower more efficient law enforcement. According to NMBM spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, by automatically monitoring and enforcing speed regulations, police resources can be reallocated to address other critical safety concerns, thereby enhancing overall community policing initiatives.

Moreover, the data collected from these devices is instrumental in traffic management and infrastructure planning. Traffic patterns can be analysed effectively, allowing for more informed decisions regarding road development and congestion management.

Another significant advantage of this initiative, Soyaya said, is the cost reduction associated with a decrease in accidents. With fewer road incidents, expenses associated with emergency responses, medical care, and vehicle repairs are expected to drop, bringing economic benefits to the municipality and its residents.

Councillor Luyanda Lawu, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, emphasised the importance of this project. “Together, these benefits contribute to a safer and more efficient transportation system for all residents. Speed cameras are an essential tool in our ongoing efforts to create a safer community. They support law enforcement and provide critical data that can help improve our roadways. Ultimately, we can expect a reduction in the costs associated with road accidents and a significant improvement in the quality of life for everyone in Nelson Mandela Bay,” he said.

Soyaya concluded by saying the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is steadfast in its commitment to enhancing the safety and welfare of its residents through innovative and effective measures. MMC Lawu also urged all road users to respect traffic laws, avoid drinking and driving, remain vigilant against illegal activities on the roads, and drive safely, further encouraging a community-wide approach to road safety.

This comes shortly after the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), recently announced the imminent installation of advanced surveillance cameras. This initiative, which highlights the collaboration between the public and private sectors, was aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.

MBDA Board Chairperson, Glenda Perumal, emphasised the importance of this initiative at the launch a few weeks ago.

“The safety of residents is paramount and is possible with the assistance of technology. This marks positive steps to building a promising future for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality,” she said.
