Residents in certain parts of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro are experiencing issues with discoloured water coming from their taps.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said in a statement that it is aware of the numerous reports of discoloured water in areas around the Western suburbs, such as Newton Park and Westering.

“We would like to confirm that no danger or health hazard will be caused by the water coming from our distribution channels. The Municipal water supply undergoes a rigorous disinfection, testing and monitoring process to ensure that the quality of potable water is safe to drink,” the Municipality said.

Discolouration is caused by mineral deposits that build up inside water infrastructure over time. When flow rates change, such as caused by pipe bursts or reservoir emptying as a result of the drought, this build up can be dislodged, causing discoloration, the Municipality explained.

“The current drought phenomenon causing intermittent water supply is largely to blame for the discoloration of water. Most areas in Newton Park have water turbidity restored to normal and the Metro will continue to monitor developments in this regard. Should your water discolouration be of concern, we suggest that you boil it for drinking purposes.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
