IN a move to strengthen the integrity and security of social grant distribution, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has introduced a biometric identity verification system.
This initiative aims at reducing the risk of social grant fraud, particularly among COVID-19 Social Relief Distress (SRD) clients.
The verification process targets specific categories of clients, including those seeking to update their mobile numbers or banking details, as well as those suspected of identity theft or fraud.
To complete the electronic identity verification, clients will need a smartphone or computer with a camera, a stable internet connection, and a well-lit environment.
SASSA is working closely with industry stakeholders to curb fraud and ensure the secure distribution of social grants. Clients who fail to complete the biometric verification may have their grants suspended. However, this process will not disrupt services for clients not listed in the specified categories.
