The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is taking a step towards improving road safety with the operationalisation of new speed cameras, following an investment of R50 million.

As of December 4, six cameras are already operational, with plans to install a minimum of 20 cameras throughout the Metro upon completion of the rollout. The focus will be on traditional high-accident zones to effectively curb reckless driving.

The introduction of the speed cameras holds numerous benefits for the community. Primarily, they aim to enhance road safety by ensuring stricter adherence to speed limits, thereby reducing the incidence of accidents and road fatalities. By discouraging dangerous driving behaviors, these cameras foster a culture of responsible road usage among drivers in the area.

Moreover, speed cameras facilitate effective enforcement of traffic regulations, which allows local law enforcement to allocate resources towards other safety priorities. The data collected from these cameras will also serve a vital role in traffic management and infrastructure planning, offering insights into traffic patterns that can lead to more informed decision-making.

“Our new speed cameras are a crucial element in our ongoing commitment to building safer roads for all citizens,” said Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

“They not only enhance enforcement capabilities but also provide essential data that helps improve our road networks. We anticipate a decline in the costs associated with road accidents, leading to an improved quality of life for all residents.”

Through these efforts, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya said municipality anticipates a significant advancement in transportation safety and efficiency, ultimately benefiting the entire community with safer roadways and reducing the economic burden of traffic-related incidents.
