The R60 million Arlington Tip Site Fencing project has commenced, signalling an end to a spate of criminal activity that included armed robberies, vandalism, and theft within the premises of the site that has been happening for more than five years.

The Mayoral Committee Member for Public Health, Thsonono Buyeye, is satisfied with the progress that has been made to commence this capital project.

We have for the past five years experienced serious criminal activities within this site where our innocent residents and waste management business people have been attacked and robbed at this site, due to poor access control measures. At the centre it has been the vandalised fence which opened the site to the free movement of criminals.

Buyeye said he was satisfied with the progress that he saw during his recent visit to the site. The directorate had budgeted R60 million for fencing Arlington Waste Facility, with R15million of that taken from the 2023/24 financial year budget. Buyeye said this is a permanent solution, ensuring the safety of residents and workers, and the security of the facility as well.

“As a department we are very proud about this project. We are happy with the progress, I will keep a close eye on progress to make sure that the residents and businesses that use this facility daily are safe. This will also go a long way in decreasing incidents of illegal dumping, as some would choose to dump their refuse illegally because of their fear for Arlington Tip site,” added Buyeye.

The project has created 20 employment opportunities for residents. Three SMMEs contractors have been hired to be part of the project. This project which started in October last year with the clearing of the site is projected to end in June 2024. Buyeye called on residents to work with the municipality and law enforcement agencies to eliminate criminal activity in the area as construction continues.
