A woman and her young child were asleep in their Newton Park home when burglars entered their room and attacked the woman with a panga during the early hours of yesterday morning.
The 49-year-old victim and her 12-year-old daughter were asleep in their home in Kinnersley Street when they were woken up by the light in their room at approximately 02:00 on Wednesday.
Two unknown men, armed with a firearm and panga, threatened the woman and her daughter and demanded money. As the woman tried to ward off the attackers, she sustained lacerations from the panga on her arms. She also sustained a panga wound to the head.
Her daughter was not harmed but their hands were bound with cable ties.
According to police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, the men took jewellery and watches from the safe, two cell phones and the TV set.
“Entry was gained by forcing open the sliding door and the suspects left the same way they entered,” Naidu said.
“The woman’s husband was working nightshift at the time of the incident. The complainant was taken to hospital for treatment,” she added.
The Detective Trio Task Team is investigating a case of house robbery.
