MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe handed over sports attire and equipment to Nelson Mandela Bay district leagues, sport hubs, and clubs during a function held at Bayworld Boardroom in Summerstrand, Gqeberha, recently.

Among the distinguished guests gracing the function was Nelson Mandela Bay Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture director, Ntombekhaya Makaza, with her deputy director, Warren Loubscher, religious leaders, the MMC of Sport, Bassie Kamana, Nelson Mandela Bay Sports Confederation secretary, Sibongile Fondini, Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association secretary, Roger Joseph, traditional leaders, Chief Edmund Stuurman, Prince Mfundo Fatuse and Chief Deon Spandiel and some ward councillors, as well as the sports leaders.

Kontsiwe delivered a keynote address in which she appealed to the sports administrators to work together with the aim of uniting people through sport.

“Sport brings people together that do not know each other. Nowadays, we have youth in our areas that commit crime almost every day. Sport instils discipline. Therefore, the federations have a mammoth task of uniting people.

“Those that are in the federations must draw in those that are not in the federations. It is not the right thing to feel comfortable to see other people not in the federations. I appeal to the Department of Sport to reach out to those who are not in federations because they do what is untoward. We as the provincial government would like to see our children taking part in sport. Sport helps to promote healthy living style,” said Kontsiwe.

MEC Kontsiwe handed over the sport attire and equipment, worth R926 000, to the Nelson Mandela Metro District leagues, sport hubs and clubs in Gqeberha.

This clothing and equipment went to volleyball, table tennis, basketball, hockey, athletics, cricket, baseball, netball, soccer, cricket, gymnastics and powerlifting.
