The first time he saw his soulmate, she was at a parade in Main Street, North End.

A few weeks later, the youth guild at St Barnabas Church organised a combined dance, where he saw her again and knew that this was the woman he would like to share the rest of his life with.

Duncan Campbell McDougall and Valerie Catherine Saunders were married on October 8, 1960.

They will be celebrating their 60th anniversary tomorrow.

Both have strong ties to Port Elizabeth, where they were born and educated, worked and live to this day.

The McDougalls were blessed with three children.

The eldest child is the late Lloyd McDougall, followed by Dianne McDougall and Merlene Alfonso.

They also have one grandchild, Gabriella Alfonso.

Duncan and Valerie ascribe their success in marriage to the fact that God has always been the centre of their lives, as they have served their church community faithfully and been true friends to their large friendship group their entire life.
