A man was stabbed to death on Sunday, 29 November for what appeared to be his cell phone.
SAPS Algoa Park detectives are now urgently seeking the communities assistance in tracing the suspects allegedly involved in the murder and robbery incident which took place in Bennett Street in Sidwell.
According to Col Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, it is alleged that at about 06:30 Steven Branders (52) was walking from a shop in Haupt Street into Bennett Street when two unknown males approached him.
“CCTV footage show that Branders tried to ward off his attackers who overpowered him and pushed him on the ground. He was stabbed several times. One of the suspects grabbed something from his hand, possibly his cellphone, and they got into an old white Mazda Midge or Ford which reversed and picked up the two suspects. Two other men were in the vehicle,” Naidu said.
Branders died prior to receiving any medical attention. The motive for the fatal stabbing is robbery.
“From the CCTV footage, the vehicle is very old and may have a dent in the front, and the back window is totally broken. The window is fitted with a makeshift plastic covering. There were passing vehicles who may have witnessed the attack.”
A case of murder and robbery is under investigation.
Police is appealing to the communities or any witnesses to assist them in tracing the suspects or the vehicle. They are asked to contact D/W/O Errol Kleinhans at SAPS Algoa Park on 083 243 4567, 041 401 1061 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111; or their nearest police station. Callers may remain anonymous.
