GQEBERHA – A murder case was opened by SAPS Gelvandale after Lyle Phillips (29) was shot yesterday, Tuesday 27 January 2026, in Cleary Estate.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, preliminary information indicates that SAPS Gelvandale responded to a shooting incident at approximately 09:00 in Norman Middleton Street, Cleary Estate.
“On arrival they found two spent cartridges and were informed that the victim who was shot inside a taxi was rushed to the hospital for treatment. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and passed away at the hospital.”
She added that the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the suspects involved will be investigated. “The white Tata vehicle that was used during the shooting was found abandoned in Allie Street, Salt Lake.”
Janse Van Rensburg stated that the investigation is ongoing.
