While patrolling the N2 freeway near Coega, members of Gqeberha K9 and Flying Squad arrested a 41-year-old man during the early hours of the morning on April 22, in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that at about 00:30, the members spotted a silver Mercedes Benz that had driven over the barriers and hit a pole.
She said when they approached the vehicle, they found the driver had passed out in the vehicle.
“A .38 special revolver and three rounds of ammunition were found lying near the gear lever. The serial number of the firearm was filed off,” said Naidu.
She said the firearm will be sent to ballistics for analysis while the vehicle was impounded for further investigation.
“The suspect will appear in the Motherwell Magistrate Court on April 24, on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition,” said Naidu.
