MALABAR Primary School recently celebrated the grand unveiling of their newly refurbished ablution services, a project made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Gold Rush Foundation and the artistic contributions of Muneeb Wassin. The refurbishment, which took a few months to complete, has brought significant improvements to the school’s facilities, much to the delight of both learners and staff.
The refurbishment project included extensive upgrades such as tiling, painting, replacing all broken cisterns and toilets, fixing windows, lights, and pipes, and plastering the walls. Additionally, vibrant murals were added to the walls, thanks to the creative efforts of Muneeb Wassin, bringing a touch of art and inspiration to the facilities.
School principal, Patula La Reservee, expressed her gratitude towards the sponsors and highlighted the positive impact the new facilities have had on the school community. “We are extremely grateful to the Gold Rush Foundation for their most generous sponsorship. We are now able to provide our learners with dignified toilet facilities. This has motivated learners to take care and look after their toilets, instilling a sense of pride and restoring their dignity,” she said.
The refurbishment process was not without its challenges. During the upgrades, learners were limited to using certain toilets, and the noise caused a bit of an inconvenience. However, Principal La Reservee noted, “We are not complaining about that at all. It wasn’t for a long time, and the end result has been well worth it.”
The response from the learners has been overwhelmingly positive. “Learners are very happy to have new and clean toilets,” said La Reservee. The maintenance and cleaning staff have also found the new facilities easier to work in and maintain, thanks to the plastered walls and other improvements.
To ensure the upkeep of the new facilities, ground staff have been placed on duty at each toilet block. The school employs cleaners, funded through their own fund-raising efforts, to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the toilets. This proactive approach has helped keep the facilities in top condition and has contributed to a more pleasant environment for everyone at the school.
Looking ahead, Malabar Primary School has ambitious plans for further improvements. “We would like to upgrade all Inter-sen Phase toilets next year, develop our media/resources centre, sports facilities, and our science department,” Principal La Reservee shared. These future projects aim to enhance the overall learning environment and provide students with the best possible resources and facilities.
