In a bold move challenging societal norms, Gqeberha’s Portia Hlombe (51) has chosen to defy stereotypes by participating in Mrs Bold South Africa. This courageous step was fuelled by the societal pressures dictating how women of a certain age should present themselves.
Hlombe shared her journey of battling with societal expectations that often led to feelings of depression and low self-esteem.
“As a mother and grandmother, I felt the weight of societal judgments on my appearance and behaviour, which ultimately took a toll on my mental health,” she shared.
However, upon encountering an advertisement for the Mrs Bold South Africa pageant on Facebook, she found the opportunity to reclaim her self-esteem and empower other women facing similar struggles. Contrary to popular pageant stereotypes, she aims to redefine beauty standards and challenge societal norms surrounding age, body image, and femininity.
Acknowledging the prevalence of abuse and unrealistic expectations faced by women in her age group, she emphasised the importance of empowerment and support systems.
“Through initiatives like Girls Out, and support groups such as Masincedane Women Support Group and Hlumani Ma Africa Savings Club, I try to actively engage with and uplift women,” she said.
Her decision to participate in the pageant has sparked both admiration and criticism from her colleagues, highlighting the pervasive nature of ageism and body shaming, Hlombe claimed.
“Firstly, the way they looked at me, then they reminded me of my age, how I look, and started body shaming me. They even asked what my children would say, wouldn’t they be embarrassed, and all sorts of negativity you can think of,” she said.
Nevertheless, she remains resolute in her pursuit of self-fulfilment and empowerment, even making it as one of 40 finalists in the pageant. “An achievement I’m very proud of,” she remarked.
Encouraging other women to prioritise themselves and challenge societal constraints, she advocates for self-acceptance and embracing individuality. With hashtags like #Rebrandthewomanyouare and #GirlYouCan, Hlombe inspires women to celebrate their uniqueness and pursue their dreams, regardless of societal expectations.
