The Grey High boys will be flying the flag for Nelson Mandela Bay at two prestigious sporting events in Gauteng this weekend.
Grey will take on the best in the country in the North-South T20 cricket tournament, which starts in Pretoria tomorrow.
The Gqeberha outfit will also be in action on Friday and Saturday, and will hopefully be involved in Sunday’s final. The rugby guys will be at the finals of the Frogfoot 7s series at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, also taking on the best.
Lavela Pongolo and Meyer Prinsloo will be key players for Grey. They were part of the Eastern Province u/17 team which played in the national tournament in Bloemfontein last week.
After losing in the Cup Quarter Finals against Free State, EP qualified for the Plate final but struggled against the Blue Bulls. The Bulls won 29–5 but the EP boys can be proud of a good effort.
“Not bad, considering we were only able to get three days of practice before the tournament,” coach Laurence Christie of St Andrew’s College said.
“I am proud of the young men’s efforts, but we could have been more accurate with execution. We should have stuck to structure more,” he explained.
EP was also represented at the Iqhawe Week for u/15 teams at Jeppe High in Johannesburg last week.
Here, EP left the best for last when they delivered a stunning performance against Limpopo Blue Bulls. They won 84–0, dominating proceedings right from the start.
It was clear that EP wanted to win. They not only produced a good attacking game, but defended brilliantly to make sure they didn’t concede any points.
Before this fine performance, EP had two tough matches but learned a lot against Western Province and Griquas to bounce back strongly.
WP beat EP 27–0 but had to work much harder than the score line might suggest. Griquas was very organised in beating EP 43–0.
On the cricket field, Grey had good preparation for their Pretoria trip in the Cape Schools Week in Stellenbosch.
Grey was impressive in beating Paarl Gymnasium by 146 runs, but it was a thriller against Wynberg in which Grey was beaten by just seven runs. A good team effort against Paarl Boys secured victory by six wickets.
Another Gqeberha school, Pearson High, was also at the tournament and had a difficult time against the number one rated side in the country, Rondebosch.
Esa Gangat did a great job with the ball, but Rondebosch won by 183 runs.
Jayden Groenewald caught the eye with a well-played 50 against Paul Roos Gym but Pearson lost by 8 wickets.
Pearson was at their best in beating Wynberg by 70 runs. Cayden Wilson and Owen Reyneke-Barnard batted beautifully, and Groenewald took five wickets to seal the deal.
Framesby was another Gqeberha side which was busy on the cricket field. They did very well at the Punt High Week in Mossel Bay.
They had an easy 10 wicket victory over Swartland, but it was much tougher against DF Malan when Framesby got home by 11 runs.
