LOCAL athletes produced outstanding results during the Eastern Cape powerlifting and bench press championships, held at Cape Recife School recently.

Xolani Ndatya, competed in both the disabled and able body bench press competition, and set a new record of 105kg in the master 1 under-74kg disabled and able body division.

Bertram David Weyer-Henderson set a new bench press record of 135kg in the sub-junior 93kg division, while Jared Leask set a new unofficial SA record of 212.5kg in the bench press open 120kg+ division, with Brandon Jones, as the best overall bench press male in the open 120kg+ division, with a bench press of 192.5kg.

Mbasa Qilingele, claimed the best overall women’s bench press title, with a record 75kg in the junior, under-84kg division.

Novice Mieke Stander, a first time championship competitor, set new records in the squat 107.5kg and the bench press 65kg in the open, under-69kg division.

Making a strong come back after seven years away, Miriam Sinclair achieved a squat record of 75kg, and a bench press record of 52.5kg in the master 3, under-57kg weight division.

Vanessa Lessing set a new dead-lift record of 140kg in the open category and set four Eastern Cape records in the master 1 under-69kg division.

In the women’s equipped powerlifting championships, sub-junior Charnleigh Kotze, set records in the squat 125kg, bench press 60kg and the dead lift 145kg in the under-69kg division.
