A young powerlifter from Nelson Mandela Bay has set her sights on the World Championships in Romania later this year.

Janel Daffue (25) is fully aware of the challenging task ahead but is determined to demonstrate her abilities to the world.

With seasoned trainer, André Ludik, guiding her through this endeavour, there’s reason for her optimism.

Her immediate goal is to deliver a top-class performance on March 1 at the Eastern Cape Championships in Gqeberha, which would guarantee her participation at the nationals.

The nationals will also be held in Gqeberha, on April 12.

Since Daffue embarked on her powerlifting journey in 2002, she has made significant progress.

In her first year, she was selected to represent South Africa at the Junior World Championships in Turkey, where she achieved a commendable sixth position.

In 2023, she won her division at the SA Open but narrowly missed selection for the SA team by just 2.5 kilograms.

As a full-time employee, she must train after hours, requiring dedication and hard work.

Daffue stated that she aims to surpass her previous personal bests in the squat (152.5kg), bench press (85kg), deadlift (152.5kg), and total (390kg).

When asked why she decided to take up powerlifting, she said, “I was training in the gym one evening when Coach André approached me and asked if I would give powerlifting a try.

“I immediately loved the idea, and from then on, I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.

“It doesn’t just make you stronger; it also boosts your confidence in everything you do.”
Daffue said.

Ludik remarked that Daffue exemplifies what can be achieved with self-belief.

“She is a real pocket rocket and is sure to take the world by storm,” he predicts.
