MOTHERWELL Shopping Centre, in partnership with Sporting Chance, conducted coaching clinics during the school holidays, from Wednesday to Friday last week.
According to Motherwell Shopping Centre project coordinator, Mkhuseli Kusta Layini, the aim of the coaching clinic was to keep the learners off the streets and encourage them to live a healthy lifestyle. Layini said that they organised the programme for learners, aged nine to 13, from Vezubuhle and Dumani Primary Schools. Layini revealed that they had equipped learners with soccer and netball skills.
“We run this programme for the learners who never played netball and soccer and for those learners who play for their schools.
“Again, we wanted the kids to play out of their areas but this programme is meant strictly for Motherwell primary schools.
“There were only 45 participants because we adhere to COVID-19 regulations,” said Layini.
Sporting Chance project manager, Bradlyn Stuurman, stated that Motherwell Shopping Centre and Sporting Chance promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle through sport.
Stuurman said, “This programme is child-centred. We develop the learners and encourage these children to play sport.
“One day some of these children may be national players while others may be sports administrators.”
Stuurman said the programme would be run annually at Motherwell Shopping Centre.
He said, “The programme was run successfully by the coaches and the learners were disciplined over the three days.
“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Dumani and Vezubuhle Primary Schools, soccer coaches, who are Thandile Woji and Thandiwe Pule Mboniswa, and the netball coaches, who are Ntomboyise Joni, Anelisa Dayimani and Siphelo Mbeko.
“The learners were outstanding and I am very thrilled. Layini was also very helpful because he is very passionate about sport.”
