THE 2023 World Gymnaestrada, to be hosted in Amsterdam from July 30 to August 5 will be graced by more than 30 gymnasts from Ibhayi Rhythmic gymnastics club.

According to the club’s founder, Shantell Smith, whose love for the sport of rhythmic gymnastics started at an early age, the prestigious event draws participants from all over the world.

Smith further indicated that the honour bestowed on the athletes is often thrown a financial curve ball that requires each gymnast to pay an estimated R35 000 for expenses associated with the event.

“This financial burden is very heavy on our parents wishing to have their young ones participate in this life-changing opportunity,” Smith said.

The situation has necessitated the club, the gymnasts and parents to undertake fund-raising endeavours aimed at assisting the participants to be able to partake in the event.

“The club is making a plea to anyone who can sponsor our gymnasts to take part in this auspicious event.

“Our request for assistance is not limited to direct financial resources, but things that can be used to generate money that can contribute to our target of ensuring that the gymnasts and the coaches are provided for,” Smith added.

Contributions made towards the course will receive a special mention in the club’s newsletter and at every fund-raising event including the annual concert and termly competitions.

The work done by the club has not only impacted positively on Smith, but also on the girls. This is evident in the journey that shows a club that only had five students in 2005, and now boasts a staggering 150 students in the Eastern Cape.

Notably, a great highlight saw the club being the first Eastern Cape outfit to have gymnasts competing in the Zone 6 African Championships in 2013.

“Our request for assistance from the public will ensure that the hard work put into the craft by the coaching staff and the gymnasts bears fruits not just for the club, but also for Gqeberha, the Eastern Cape Province and the country at large,” Smith said.
