President Cyril Ramaphosa announced yesterday, 27 June that the country will be moving to adjusted alert level 4 lockdown for the next two weeks, from Monday, June 28 until July 11. 

Except for the sale of alcohol that is prohibited and schools that will close on Wednesday, 30 June, there are also a few other restrictions that have been gazetted.

Here is what to expect:

Limit on gatherings

  • All gatherings are prohibited, except for funerals, which are limited to 50 people
  • Religious gatherings, political, cultural and social gatherings are all prohibited
  • Businesses, supermarkets, shops, pharmacies and grocery stores are subject to a limitation of 50% of the floor space, which includes customers and employees
  • Gatherings at beaches, parks and dams are prohibited (beaches will remain open)

These places will be closed until 11 July

  • Cinemas and theatres
  • Casinos
  • Restaurants, except for take-aways and deliveries
  • Museums, galleries, archives and libraries
  • Gyms and fitness centres
  • Conference centres, exhibitions and entertainment facilities
  • Night clubs
  • Shebeens and taverns
  • Auctions
  • Bazaars and fétes
  • Flea markets

What is allowed

Gatherings at the following places are allowed, subject to limitations:

  • Hotels, lodges, bed and breakfast, timeshare facilities, resorts and guesthouses – 50% of the capacity
  • Restaurants and other in-house dining facilities may only operate for off-site consumption of food and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Sporting activities, including professional and non-professional matches – still no spectators
  • Bus and taxi services may carry 100% of the licensed capacity for any trip not regarded as long distance (more than 200km)
  • Early childhood development centres will remain open

What is not allowed

  • A person may not be evicted from his or her land or their place of residence for the duration of the national state of disaster, unless a court has granted an order authorising eviction or demolition
  • No visiting at older persons’ residential facilities (such as retirement homes/villages)
  • Bus and taxi services may not carry more than 70% of the licensed capacity for long distance travel
  • Transportation of alcohol is prohibited, except where alcohol is required for industries producing hand sanitizers
  • Interprovincial travel for leisure to Gauteng is prohibited
  • All initiations that have not commenced at the time of the new regulations, may not take place
