Oyama Kara Dojo sensei, Andiswa Mpiyane, is using karate classes to keep the youth busy and off the street corners.
Mpiyane’s club draws youth from Motherwell NU 1, 2, 3 and 7, as well as from Ikamvelihle Township. According to Mpiyane, Oyama Kara Dojo has more than 50 students.
She also divulged that she is assisted by sensei Madoda Mohapi and Mzo Mfino.
Mpiyane, who has a black belt second dan in karate, stated that her students were very enthusiastic and disciplined.
“Our students arrive on time for training and show high levels of discipline at all times,” she said.
“Their parents (are very supportive). They support their children during grading and tournaments. They even accompany our club when we take part in away tournaments.
“Despite our challenges that include uniform for our students, a venue for training and transport to tournaments, we produce outstanding world class students.
“Our youth have potential; that is why we keep on moving forward, even when the going gets tough,” added Mpiyane.
The training sessions at Oyama Kara Dojo usually take place from 16:00 to 18:00, but have been postponed until further notice due to the national lockdown regulations.
