Kariega and Gqeberha K9 units arrested vehicle hijackers on Tuesday, March 26, after separate incidents involving a truck and a motorbike. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg reported the recovery of stolen goods valued at about R125,000.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, it is alleged that at about 07:15, a truck was hijacked on the R75, when the driver of a truck had stopped to check something at the back of the truck when he was accosted by three unknown men who arrived in a white bakkie. The driver and his passenger were ordered to get out of the truck and shoved into the bakkie. They were dropped off in Veeplaas where they reported the incident at SAPS Kwadwesi.
” At about 08:15, Kariega K9 members were busy with patrols on the R75 when they noticed a truck standing on the side of the road in the direction of Despatch.
” When they stopped to investigate, they noticed a man running away, and he was apprehended.” said Janse Van Rensburg.
Janse Van Rensburg said a second suspect jumped over a fence and disappeared into dense bushes.
She added that a signal jammer was found in the suspect’s backpack, and that all the stock containing frozen foods and groceries valued at about R125 000 were recovered.
” The 48-year-old suspect is detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking and possession of suspected stolen property. He is expected to appear in court soon.”
In another unrelated incident, also on Tuesday, March 26 at approximately 20:30, the complainant was driving a motorcycle (black Hero 100CC) in Springbok Street in Gelvandale when he was hit with a stone.
