The legal representative for June Steenkamp, mother of slain model Reeva Steenkamp, has slammed false claims circulating on social media and threatened legal action against those spreading “defamatory lies.”

Tania Koen, acting for Steenkamp, confirmed to PE Express that recent posts circulating on social media regarding Oscar Pistorius were false.

“I intend taking legal action for the removal of this fake news. It is blatantly untrue,” Koen commented. “The author and the page will be held accountable for their blatant lies and defamatory statements.”

Juneโ€™s daughter, Reeva Steenkamp, was tragically murdered by Oscar Pistorius in 2013.

Koen shared that the claims were fabricated when it first appeared around Mother’s Day and remain false now, particularly given Steenkamp’s current medical condition.

“It was not true when they published it, when it appeared around Mother’s Day it seems, and also not now when she is not even able to communicate coherently,” Koen explained.

Steenkamp, aged 78, was hospitalised on Monday, 1 September, following a stroke. She is currently recovering from a stroke at a rehabilitation facility, with Koen describing the targeting of a vulnerable woman as “disgraceful.”

“It is disgraceful that a woman who is in a rehabilitation centre trying to recover from a stroke is the subject of so much hatred from the people who comment on this fake article,” Koen added.

Regarding Steenkamp’s recovery, Koen provided a optimistic update: “Physically there’s huge improvement.”

She added that a meeting scheduled for later this week will determine the next steps in June’s care and rehabilitation.
