ISIQALO Boxing Club, which faces a number of challenges, is determined to keep its programmes running as usual.
Isiqalo BC is based in Zwide Township; although it was established by trainer, Tembile Tyani, in Chatty in 2016. Tyani informed PE Express that his club “draws boxers from Soweto-On Sea and Zwide”.
Tyani said, “We are faced with some challenges at our club, but we aim high. We do not have equipment or a proper venue. The current venue – which is Zamukukhanya Primary School Hall – has been completely vandalised, which affects our training. The electrical wires were stolen.”
Tyani stated that his boxers take part in the tournaments that are run by the Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisation (ECABO) and the South African National Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO), despite their challenges.
“We have only one punch bag, which is used by 20 boxers in our stable. The club officials and parents take a central stage to keep Isiqalo BC going.
“If we can have a sound financial assistance, we will be able to buy a first aid kit, skipping robes, stopwatches and other equipment.
“We once applied for funding at National Lottery Commission (NLC) but they told us that their budget was fully committed, although we submitted all the documents that NLC needed.”
Tyani stated that his club officials, public relations officer Roger Mofu, Thembisa Baatjies and their members, Phila Bonga and Phinda Tshanga, were playing a fundamental role in keeping the youth in sport.
“Sport helps to keep the youth busy rather than doing crime.
“The parents of our boxers and the community appreciate what we do for their children,” said Tyani who can be contacted for any advice on 078 820 6313.
