The Algoa Bay Council for the Aged (ABCA) is determined to improve the well-being of lonely seniors through their initiative, “Adopt-a-Granny-Grandpa.”
This programme aims to combat loneliness among elderly residents by pairing them with volunteers for companionship and support, fostering valuable intergenerational connections.
“Many of our elderly residents do not have close family,” explained Christa Terblanche, Public Relations Officer and Fundraiser at ABCA. “Friendship is limited because the majority are also dealing with the difficulties of ageing. Our initiative is essential in enriching the lives of both seniors and volunteers.”
Last year, Terblanche shared with the PE Express that ABCA cares for 550 residents directly and serves 2400 seniors through various services. Despite some residents having family nearby, many have no family or have relatives who have emigrated.
The Adopt-a-Granny-Grandpa initiative welcomes involvement from anyone, including students, professionals, and retirees, who wish to connect with older adults. Volunteers can tailor care packages based on the needs and preferences of their adoptive grandparents, ensuring that the items are suitable and appreciated.
Suggested care package items include essential foods, personal care products, comfort items, and activities such as puzzles, books, and crafts.
Volunteers can even offer personal touches like framed photographs, handmade gifts, or visits to a coffee shop. Additionally, support can be provided anonymously for those who prefer privacy.
One of the most pressing needs of these senior citizens is affordable housing and frail care, which many cannot afford. Basic groceries have also become increasingly challenging to secure. “We strive to address these needs, but the community’s support is invaluable,” Terblanche said.
ABCA’s initiative not only brings joy and support to seniors but also enriches the lives of volunteers through meaningful connections, Terblanche concluded.
