THE children of the Port Elizabeth home-school community are excitedly preparing to showcase the skills they have learned with a special entrepreneurs market at Fountain Vineyard Church in Miramar on Saturday.
The community has grown in the past few years as more and more families choose to homeschool their children.
They are a large group of families who work together as a unit to provide the social and cultural needs of their children without sending them to mainstream schools. A group comes together every week for sports activities, art lessons, visits to museums and much more.
“The group has more than 100 families represented just in the junior section – the children’s ages range from two to around 12,” said Megan Bennett, the admin of the group.
According to Tersia Muston, a member of the homeschool community, the increase in the number of home-schooled children is because of schools being overcrowded and issues like bullying and other safety concerns.
“Many of the children also need more one-on-one attention,” she added.
“They have the opportunity to focus more on what their interests are and specialise in their field. They learn how to be entrepreneurs and to think out of the box.”
In spirit of this, the homeschoolers decided to host the entrepreneurs’ market.
They welcome anyone who wishes to join them for the day and support their young entrepreneurs.
So far, more than 18 stalls have been confirmed, which will be selling children’s car organisers, walking sticks, bracelets, dinosaur tails, unicorn headbands, play dough, bird feeders, seedlings, homemade toys, gluten-free snacks, growth Mindset books, candleholders, stress balls and recycled creative goodies.
All items are made by the homeschoolers.
There will also be food stalls, a fun run and lucky draws.
Parents who may have questions about homeschooling can also pop in during the day and ask the homeschoolers any questions they might have.
The entrepreneurs market will take place at Fountain Vineyard Church in Newcombe Avenue, Miramar this Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00.
There will be a R5 entrance fee to cover the hall hire.
