Gqeberha National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) took to action following a destress call from a capsized boat at Noordhoek on Friday, November 18.
According to NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, upon responding to the scene, it was confirmed that five casualties were in the water at a capsized rigid hull inflatable boat that had capsized three nautical miles West of Noordhoek, half a nautical mile offshore.
“On arrival on the scene, the skipper, an adult male, was found to have safely swum to shore. Four adult males were also found clinging to the upturned hull of their capsized casualty craft, with all five crew members being accounted for,” said Lambinon.
He added that NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed from the NSRI rescue craft into the water at the capsized casualty craft.
The rescue undertaking saw two of the casualties rescued onto an NSRI rescue craft, with the other two remaining in the water with members of the rescue team to assist with the righting of the casualty craft.
“No further injuries and assistance were required. We commend the team for the swift response,” Lambinon said.
