Nelson Mandela Bay residents can expect to see the implementation of various grass-cutting projects across the metro, after the municipality recently officially handed over the vegetation control project to contractors.

This comes after the municipality experienced some delays with service delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic from last year.

MMC for public health in the metro, Lance Grootboom, said that they knew it has been a long time since these services were affected by the pandemic but that the contractors had been appointed and a war declared on overgrown areas. “Our teams will be out there every day doing rough cutting.

“We want to inform our residents that this is not the grass mowing contract, but this allows us to cut areas that have overgrown in order to beautify, service and maintain the areas,” Grootboom explained.

“The contractors are starting with vegetation control which includes weeds spraying.

“Our teams [started the project] in St. George’s Park and Victoria Park because these public parks are not in a good state.

“Our grass mowing contract is in the final stages for the appointment of the service providers. While we are waiting for that, we are maintaining the overgrown areas,” he said.

Public health executive director, Sizwe Mvunelwa, added that for the next three years the metro was guaranteed to have the service rendered in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“When we get complaints now, we will know that we have mechanisms in place to respond.

“We have put processes in place where we will be able to monitor the work they do because we want to make sure that there is value for money for our residents. We want the residents to be happy and able to see a difference from where we came from,” Mvunelwa said.
