What started out as Lumka Cube, a young woman, asking her friends to help her give food to the needy during peak COVID-19 in 2020, has now become a foundation that not only feeds hundreds of people, but helps struggling students in tertiary education as well.

Grab and Go Foundation has recently launched “Feed the Mind”, a new campaign which seeks to assist students who don’t have enough food.

“We are currently working hand-in-hand with the Nelson Mandela University Engagement Office and have recently made contact with Port Elizabeth College regarding issues at their campuses,” said Cube.

The foundation has also partnered with a local law firm that donated soup, feeding over 300 homeless people. Additionally they are donating clothes, food items and hosting fun day events for the Sinethemba Children’s Home in Korsten, Gqeberha.

“What is next for the Grab and Go Foundation is expanding throughout South Africa. We have recently had some members interested in running the foundation from different provinces. The larger the impact, the better for the benefit of our society! We want to go national and hopefully one day be recognised internationally,” said Cube.

“Through our work, we have learned that no matter what someone’s circumstances may be, everyone has the capacity to achieve great things,” said the foundation’s chairperson, Chuma Qakala.

“We have also learned that even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference. We are grateful for the opportunity to help others, and humbled by the resilience and strength of the people we have met.”
